Smile pinki Megan Mylan elated at bagging Oscar

Director elated over acclaim for 'Smile Pinki'2009-02-23 [15:36:07 hrs]Indukant Dixit Varanasi, Feb 23 (PTI) Bagging the Oscar for her documentary on the pilght of a cleft-lip afflicted Indian girl, director Megan Mylan today hoped its success will bring light to the lives of four million children suffering from the problem.Mylan, who had shot her documentary in Varanasi, the cultural capital of India and Mirzapur, the home town of the little girl, Pinki, told PTI over phone from Los Angeles that "I feel very happy and fortunate that my real story on the plight of cleft-lip children has got due recognition. " "This is the happiest moment of my life, as I could transform the life of a small child from a little known wonderful place and even win an Oscar for that cause," the producer-director said. Smile Pinki", the tale of a Uttar Pradesh girl and her fight against the social stigma of a cleft-lip, won the Oscar award for Best Documentary (Short). "The success of the documentary may bring light of hope in the lives of over four million cleft-lip children all over the world," she said describing her experience in Varanasi and Mirzapur as amazing.

Twenty die after consuming spurious liquor at Varanasi, Magestrial enquiry ordered

Varanasi, Feb 18 The Uttar Pradesh Government has ordered magesterial enquiry in the worst ever hooch tragedy of the city in which twenty people have died and twenty others are still undergoing treatment in different hospitals.

The Commissioner of Varanasi N Ravi Kumar ordered Magesterial Enquiry into the case, which will be conducted by the ADM City, Atal Kumar Rai. He has been asked to submit his report within seven days.

Meanwhile the UP government has announced to to pay exgratia of Rs one lakh each to the families of the victims killed in the tragedy from the Chief Minister's fund. The announcement to this effect was made by the UP Vidhan Sabha speaker, Sukhdev Rajbhar on behalf of the Chief Minister Mayawati at Varanasi today.

Deputy Inspector General of Police DK Thakur said that with 14 more deaths in the illicit liquor tragedy at Soyepur village under Cantt police station, Hazipur village under Cholapur police station and Benipur village under Sarnath police station of the district of Wednesday, the number of dead has gone up to 20 while twenty others are still undergoing treatment in different hospitals of the city. Two others died yesterday in Cholapur area were linked with the hooch tragedy but later it was confirmed by the postmortem report that they died of some disease, however they had also consumed liquor, he added.

He said that 14 more people, who had consumed the spurious liquor at Soyepur village on Tuesday night, died today during their treatment. Fifteen more people were rushed to the BHU and Kabirchaura hospital after falling ill in the hooch tragedy, last night.

Earlier people fell seriously ill after consuming illicit liquor in Soyepur village under Cantt police station, Hazipur village under Cholapur police station and Benipur village under Sarnath police station of the district on Tuesday night.

All the affected people were rushed to the different hospitals of the city where six people, including a woman died during treatment on Wednesday. However it was confirmed today after the postmortem report that Bachchelal and Shaukat Ali of Cholapur area had died of some disease and not because of the consumption of spurious liquor.

Some of the dead, including the Cholapur people, have been identified as Lalji (52yr), Shivsharan (65yr), Laxmina ( F, 55yr), Bachchelal (40yr) Shaukat (45yr), Shambhu (42yr), Panchu (45 yr), Gyandas (40 yr), Lalchand (52 yr), Shyamji Rajbhar (48 yr), Gannu ( 30 yr), Kamla (75 yr), Ramashankar (50 yr), Banarasi (33 yr) and Kalawati (45 yr).

He said that 20 other persons are undergoing treatment in the BHU and Kabirchaura hospitals of varanasi.

He said that the preliminary investigations have revealed that the victims had purchased pouches of liquor from a man of the same village involved in the trade of illicit liquor and allegedly he brought the illicit liquor form the neighboring Jharkhand state.

He said that the main culprits Gopal and Bhonu Jaiswal are absconding while the wife of Bhonu, who was also associated in his illegal trade, has been arrested.

The DIG said that three policemen including the Lalpur police post incharge Ram Narayan Ram have been suspended with immediate effect for laxity in duty.

The District Magistrate, Ravindra Kumar said that the Excise inspector of the area Rajesh Singh and constables of the Excise department in the concerned area Dev Prakash Singh, Shivprasad Rana and Shashikant Singh have been suspended and enquiry has been instituted against them.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the dead have been sent for postmortem and police teams have been rushed to nab the other culprits involved in the illegal trade. DM said that the Viscera of the victim has been saved for further investigation into the matter.
